Averting a major terror attack on Navratri in the capital, the Special Cell of Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a Pakistani terrorist in the city.

The terrorist identified as Mohammad Ashraf is a resident of Pakistan’s Punjab and was nabbed from Ramesh Park of east Delhi's Laxmi Nagar on October 8.

The police recovered an AK-47assault rifle, one extra magazine and 60 rounds, and hand grenade among other things from his possession.

According to news agency ANI, relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Act, Arms Act & other provisions are being invoked against the arrested man. A search has been conducted at his present address.

Reportedly, the terrorist was living as an Indian national in east Delhi’s Shastri Nagar by using a fake identity card with the name Ali Ahmad Noori.

According to preliminary investigations, the apprehended terror suspect entered the country through the porous India-Nepal border.

Sources said the suspect was planning to carry out a major attack during the festive season.

This development comes three days after Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana held a meeting with top officials and discussed anti-terror measures in the wake of input of a terrorist attack in the national capital during the festive season. The police informed arms and ammunition and other incrimination materials were also recovered from their possession.

The Delhi Police Special Cell last month had busted a Pakistan-organised terror module and arrested six terror suspects, including two Pakistan-ISI trained terrorists, who were planning several explosions in various parts of the country, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, during the festival season.
