Jammu-Kashmir: Indian Army JCO, 4 soldiers martyred during counter-terrorist operation in Rajouri sector

A junior commissioned officer (JCO) & four soldiers killed in action during a counter-terrorist operation in the Rajouri sector in the Pir Panjal ranges, sources said.

Five Indian Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, lost their lives while they were on a cordon and search operation to counter a possible infiltration along of the Line of Control in the Surankot area of Poonch in Jammu & Kashmir on Monday. 

As per an official, the terrorists had set up an ambush. 

The encounter is still underway. Security forces are believed to have cornered a group of 4-5 terrorists. 

The security forces had launched the operations after receiving the intelligence inputs

Last month in the Uri sector, the Indian Army killed a terrorist while capturing another alive. However, four terrorists retreated back to Pakistan side. The anti-infiltration operation went on for eight days. 

In early September, a group of terrorists tried to sneak into the Indian territory under the Poonch sector but their attempt got thwarted with alert troops. Taking advantage of the darkness, they fled back towards the Pakistan side. 

In the last week of August, an encounter was broke out between Indian troops and terrorists in which one terrorist was killed in the Poonch sector.

On August 13, a terrorist was arrested from the Mendhar area of Poonch. The security forces had also recovered four Improvised Explosive Devices. 

On August 9, the forces busted a terror hideout in the same sector. 

For the first month after the ceasefire announcement in February, no infiltration attempt was reported from the Pakistani side. It gained pace since July this year. 

On July 23-24, four terrorists were killed in Bandipora after they were infiltrated from the Machil-Gurez sector of north Kashmir.
