DCGI grants conditional market approval for Covishield, Covaxin
According to a PTI report citing government sources, the price of Covishield and Covaxin is expected to be set at Rs 275 per dosage plus a Rs 150 service charge.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) gave Covishield and Covaxin provisional market authorisation on Thursday. The vaccinations will not be sold in medical supply stores. Vaccines can be purchased by hospitals and clinics. Every six months, vaccination data must be provided to DCGI and data will be updated on the CoWIN app as well.
Taking to social media, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said COVAXIN and Covishield's approval has been raised from limited usage in emergency scenarios to standard new medicine approval in the adult population with specific conditions.
According to previous reports, the DCGI is anticipated to grant Covishield and Covaxin vaccine routine market authorisation following price fixing. According to them, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has been asked to begin working on pricing caps in order to make vaccinations more cheap. Covaxin is now priced at Rs 1,200 each dosage, whereas Covishield is offered at Rs 780 in private facilities. The rates include a service charge of Rs 150. In the country, both vaccines are only authorised for emergency usage.
On January 19, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization's Subject Expert Committee on COVID-19 recommended that the Covid vaccines Covishield and Covaxin be granted normal market approval for use in the adult population, subject to specific limitations.
