Hyderabad to have tram services where metro facilities are unavailable

Telangana government in yet another venture to reduce the massive traffic problem in Hyderabad is exploring avenues for mass transport systems like tramway and monorail facilities for Hyderabad and other nearby cities.

While the Hyderabad metro rail project is still underway, the TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) government is planning for tramway and monorail services where the metro rail services are unavailable.

GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) plans for a tramway service from Mozamjahi market to Charminar, a distance of 2.9 kms and another from Qutub Shahi tombs to Golconda with an estimated cost of Rs 250 crores.

The transport system would be on lines of Bordeaux city in France said Hyderabad Mayor Bontha Rammohan at a day-long seminar attended by GHMC officials and a delegation from France. Currently, tramway exists only in Kolkata in the country.

Central government discussed the issue with Telangana state government and tramway services would be made available in places where there is no MMTS and Metro Rail service. Central Minister Sujana Chowdary and Telangana IT and Panchayati Raj Minister K Taraka Ramarao participated in the meeting.

The tramway transportation system will be taken up in coordination with a team of experts from France. This system would be introduced not only in and around Charminar but also in nearby areas. It would be a new attraction for tourists.
