Clashes erupt in Dharna Chowk Janasena makes a chaotic entry into peoples movement

The protest against relocating Dharna Chowk from Indira Park continues. The situation took a turn for the worse as clashes erupted between the activists. Police had to resort to mild force to calm the protesters. Interestingly, Janasena made their presence known for the first time in the protest area.

According to a report in The Hans India, while one half of the protesters were against relocating Dharna Chowk, another half led by the Walkers Association said that no relocation would mean disturbances and noise in the surrounding areas. The agitation has been brewing since a month. Today, the protest took a violent turn after protesters forcefully entered Dharna Chowk, breaking chairs and police barricades. Both the police and protesters hurled chairs and rained sticks on each other.

Dharna Chowk holds political significance because this was from where a majority of the events for separation of Telangana was started. The spot has symbolic significance and it allows parties, communities a designated area to protest or make their problems known. Opposition parties like the BJP, Congress, TDP and even the Left have joined hands with Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena Party to extend support to the protest called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC).

TJAC Chairman Prof Kodandram had appealed to people to come join the protect their constitutional right. Senior Congress leader Hanumantha Rao, has also been quoted as saying, "It’s a protest against the KCR government, which is trying to suppress voices of dissent and any opposition against him and his family’s rule."

TJAC had earlier protested the rising unemployment rates in the state, at Dharna Chowk and so the decision was taken to shift the location.. This led clashes between protesters and Police. Prof Kodandaram, along with many activists and leaders were detained. Police had apparently given permission to the TJAC to protest for the retention of Dharna Chowk but the situation went out of control. Telangana TDP MLA Revanth Reddy has blamed Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for instigating people against each other.

Jansena participated in the opposition movement in Telangana and it was the first time, the Janasena is taking part in a people’s movement. In other news, actor Pawan Kalyan had announced on Monday that he would resign from films and become a full-time politician if need be. Janasena activists carried out a lot of sloganeering against KCR. When party members tried to enter the protest venue, they were stopped by the police.
