Hyderabad will be the first Indian city to get 1Gbps Internet speed: What it means for you

  • Hyderabad will become the first 'Giga' city.
  • Bengaluru-based ACT Fibernet announces 1Gbps wired broadband services.
  • 1Gbps plans will cost ₹5999 per month.
Hyderabad is the first to get 1Gbps Internet

ACT Fibernet will offer high speeds with 1TB FUP in Hyderabad at ₹5999. It also plans to extend the internet services to 10 other Indian cities soon.

With our citizens and the government moving towards the Digital India movement, high speed internet is the need of the hour. With the launch of our 1 Gbps broadband internet service, it gives me immense pride to turn this dream into reality," Bala Malladi, CEO, ACT Fibernet said.

So, what does it mean for you? Now, ACT Fibernet is among the largest non-telco ISPs. It is headquartered in Bengaluru with operations in over 11 cities across the country. ACT Fibernet has a customer base of 1.2 million and plans accelerated technological growth with the launch of the new high speed services. It should be noted that very few cities in the world offer 'giga' speeds. Wired connectivity is shadowed by mobile growth, ISPs like ACT want to change that.

The company will approach startups and Internet firms asking to adopt the high speed services. Most offices still have wired connections and the high speed Internet could help propel productivity. It will offer extremely high speed Internet in the age wherein we are crawling at an average of roughly 2.5Mbps. For instance, Gbps speed will allow downloading a full movie in mere seconds.

However, with the advent of mobile growth, how many really rely on wired connection? How many will be willing to pay as high as ₹5999? These are some unanswered questions and probably the reason why the company plans to target startups and other firms. It also plans to introduce the services in other cities soon, but the reach is still limited.
