Tamil Nadu Womans suicide video over break up goes viral

A selfie suicide video taken by a distraught 27-year-old woman has become an Internet sensation. Shot on her mobile phone, the 3-minute video explained why she is resorting to this extreme step. She committed suicide on the wedding day of her former boyfriend in Uthukuli in Tirupur district.

While the family of the young woman were reluctant to lodge a complaint, the rural police arrested her boyfriend a day after his marriage on charges of abetment of suicide. The woman, N Revathy, was a school dropout and a resident of Morattupalayam in Uthukuli. She worked at a photocopy shop in Gobichettipalayam in Erode district. Rajath (name changed) and Revathy met when the former was pursuing an MBA degree. The relationship continued for 7 years till the time Rajath decided to marry another girl after differences started occurring between the two of them. Following which, they broke up.

Revathy warned Rajath against marrying another woman. Police said that she frequently had fights with Rajath over the issue and a week before the wedding, she demanded that he cancelled the marriage, which he refused.

Revathy and her mother stayed in a rented house and avoided staying in their own house for some superstition. On that ill-fated day, Revathy told her mother that she was going to their house. When she failed to return, her mother went after her and found her hanging from the ceiling.

The mobile phone recovered from the site showed that she had spoken for three minutes, expressing her deep disappointment over her break-up with her boyfriend. The video became so popular within minutes that it became viral on WhatsApp. Her boyfriend, who now works as an executive at IFFCO Tokio general insurance company, has been arrested a day after his marriage under section 306 and has been lodged in Coimbatore jail.
