Tamil Nadu: TASMAC makes huge profit despite closure of over 3,000 outlets

  • It seems that even after the closure of many TASMAC shops, the government has earned more profit in 2017 than in 2016
  • Tamil Nadu government has closed 3,321 TASMAC shops located on State highways as per the orders of the Supreme Court
  • The government has also said that the number non-working days for TASMAC will be extended from 5 to 8 in a month

It seems that even after the closure of many TASMAC shops, the government has earned more profit in 2017 than in 2016.

Tamil Nadu government has closed 3,321 TASMAC shops located on State highways as per the orders of the Supreme Court. Many liquor stores have been relocated to places that conform to the norms laid down in the order of the Supreme Court.

The government has also said that the number non-working days for TASMAC will be extended from 5 to 8 in a month. There will be a ban on the sale of alcohol during the Parliament, Assembly and local body elections days. 

The Minister for Electricity, P Thangamani, said that the government had earned a revenue of Rs 26,995.25 crore from TASMAC this year. When compared to the income earned in the previous year, the profit has increased by Rs 149 crore.
