It was an emotional moment for Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict Perarivalan who met his family after 27 years in prison.

Perarivalan was released on bail from the Vellore Central Prison on Thursday, August 24, and reached his home in Jolarpet amidst tight police escort.

Arputham Ammal, the mother of Perarivalan, was elated to see her son after a 27-year-long wait. “After 27 years of struggle, my son will be returning from the jail. I thank late J Jayalalithaa for helping us through this. All political parties have shown support in this matter. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) MK Stalin too,” Arputham Ammal told the media.

An eight-member police team headed by a DSP is guarding the house on a round the clock vigil as directed by the government. Perarivalan has been prevented from talking to the newspersons as well, reported the New Indian Express.

Ammal had filed several petitions with the Chief Minister's special cell, seeking the release of her son on parole to meet his bed-ridden father Gnanasekaran.

Sources claimed that many of the political leaders including the VCK leader Thirumavalavan, Kanimozhi (DMK), Vaiko (MDMK) are expected to visit Jolarpet to interact with Perarivalan.
