In a shocking incident at the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), an Associate Professor and the Head of Department of Journalism and Science Communication was stabbed with a knife in her office by a former guest lecturer.

Jenefa Selwyn, the victim, sustained stab injuries in multiple places, including her neck and abdomen, reported the Hindu.

She has been admitted to a private hospital in Madurai. The University said that her injuries were not fatal.

The Hindu quoted the police saying that Jothimurugan, a resident of Kulamangalam in Madurai and a former student of MKU, was engaged as a guest lecturer on a temporary basis last academic year and was mainly handling practical sessions for the students.

However, Jenefa decided to not call him back after he was accused of inappropriate behavior with the staff and certain students.

But  Jothimurugan continued visiting Jenefa in her office demanding for a reappointment.

On Tuesday, he was reportedly waiting for her near her office in the morning and stabbed her soon after she entered the office. The students and university staff immediately rushed her for first aid at a nearby hospital in Nagamalai Pudukottai. Later, she was taken to a multi-speciality hospital in Madurai city.

The assailant, who reportedly did not try to escape, was beaten up by the students and handed over to the police. Nagamalai Pudukottai police are investigating the case.

Jenefa is married to Ezakki Muthukumar,  a Chief Staff Welfare & Labour Inspector in Indian Railways. They have two children.
