The character of a mother is given great importance in Kollywood. Right from MGR’s black and white movies to the recent ’Pitchaikaran’, stories with mother sentiment are still being in demand.

Earlier, certain heroines were categorized just for the role of mothers. They were specially meant for doing the ‘mother character’.
Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, Meera Krishnan, Kambam Meena, Madurai Sujatha are perfect examples for this.
This scenario was changed after a while where the production houses started hiring aged heroines for acting as mothers. The directors preferred them because they would add value to the role as they have already been stars of their time.
In order to give star value to their films, the directors have started looking for the heroines who are married to businessmen and have stopped from acting.
Raadhika Sarathkumar, Saranya Ponvannan, Suhasini, Revathi, Seetha, Sukanya, Bhanupriya and Nadhiya are perfect examples to be included in this list.
Since the ‘star mother’ is being given more salaries than the usual mother character, a huge competition as to who will grab the character prevails in the industry.
When asked about this, Pitchaikaran’s Dheepa Ramanujam said, “Yes, the competition exists. Similar to how the heroes and heroines compete for their roles, we do have competitions. I have acted as a mother for Sivakarthikeyan in ‘Rajini Murugan’ and Nayanthara in ‘Idhu Namma Aalu’, but I was not distinguished until my role in ‘Pitchaikaran’. This competition doesn’t mean that the story appreciates the mother character as much as they value the hero’s and the heroine’s characters. We are often not given the opportunity to exhibit our full potential.”
Dheepa Ramanujam is now busy in Murugadoss’ new movie ‘Spider’ and a Malayalam movie with Prithviraj.
