Chennai couple on bike trip shot at on NH 58 in Uttar Pradesh

The danger on Indian roads seems unending, especially in Uttar Pradesh. Just a month after a gang shot one and allegedly raped four women of a family on the Bulandshahr highway near Noida, now yet another horrific attack has been reported. 

A couple from Chennai, who reportedly were on a bike ride between Delhi and Uttarakhand, narrowly escaped with their lives after they were shot at by two assailants on bikes. The couple sustained serious injuries in the attack. 

Aditya Kumar (31) and Vijaya Lakshmi (28) are a newly married couple from Chennai. According to police reports to the media, the two had hired Royal Enfield motorbikes for a road trip from Delhi to Uttarakhand. They were accompanied by a friend, named Shyam Teja. 

The group was heading back to New Delhi from Haridwar when they were attacked on National Highway 58, around 4 pm, in Muzaffarnagar district, reports The New Indian Express. Two men on a bike shot at Aditya and Vijaya. Aditya was hit in the neck, and he lost control of the motorcycle, crashing. Vijaya also sustained injuries in the attack and the subsequent crash. 

It was their friend, Shyam Teja, who informed the police about the incident and rushed the injured couple to a local hospital. The couple later shifted to a Delhi hospital where they are recovering from their injuries.

Speaking to the Times of India, Nai Mandi police station SHO Madan Singh Bisht stated that the police suspect the attack to be a case of mistaken identity. However, Madan Singh said that the cops would be investigating all angles - from attempted robbery to road rage.
