Absconding Kolkata HC judge CS Karnan arrested in Coimbatore

Former Kolkata High Court judge CS Karnan, who was charged for his defamatory remarks against the Judiciary, was arrested in Coimbatore. He is to be brought to Chennai at 12.20 PM.

As ordered by the Supreme Court, he was arrested on June 20, by a team of West Bengal police in Coimbatore for contempt of court. Kolkata police were in search for him for more than a month.

He is to be brought to Chennai at 12.20 pm and will be made to stay there in the airport lounge area, until morning. At 11.40 AM, he will be taken to Kolkata by flight. A former Kolkata High Court judge, Karnan was arrested more than a month after he became the first judicial officer to retire as a fugitive.The 62-year old judge was sentenced to 6-months in jail by the Supreme Court on May 9, following which he went absconding. 

Three teams of West Bengal police arrested him from a private resort in Tamil Nadu. Raj Kanojia, West Bengal director general of police (home guards) said, "He resisted our officers and there was an argument also. Despite that, we arrested him."

The former judge will be produced in a court in Chennai on Wednesday for a transit remand required to take him to Kolkata. The controversy began when Karnan wrote to PM Narendra Modi to order an investigation against the judges of the Madras High Court and the apex court for corruption.
