Tokyo Olympics: India women lose hockey bronze medal playoff to Great Britain

It was a heartbreaking moment for the Indian women's hockey team, as it suffered a 3-4 defeat to Great Britain in the bronze medal playoff at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. With this, India has levelled its best-ever performance at the Games since 1980.

It was GB that was off to a tremendous attacking start, earning twin penalty corners in the opening ten minutes but missed them both. Meanwhile, six minutes later, Ellie Rayer scored the opening goal, putting GB in the lead.

There were four more attempts made, two each, but all of them went pegging. Nevertheless, Sarah Robertson doubled it in the 24th minute to pile pressure on the Indians.

However, the next minute saw a PC being saved by GB, while a resulting PC saw India pull one back through Gurjit Kaur, while she also scored to level things a minute later. At the 29th minute, India took the lead with Vandana Katariya striking, as India marginally had the upper hand at half-time.

Five minutes into the second half, Hollie Pearne-Webb levelled it for GB. However, the Indians seemingly switched to defensive mode, as it stayed 3-3 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, at the 48th minute, GB earned three successive PCs, as it converted the third one to restore its lead. While India had another chance to level it at 52nd via a PC, it failed to convert it, as GB pressed hard with its defence to see off the remaining minutes and clinch the bronze.
