Tokyo Olympics: Annu Rani seals javelin throw berth through world ranking
Annu Rani is an Indian javelin thrower, having won numerous medals at the international level. She would be competing in her maiden Olympics, having sealed her berth on Friday, based on her world ranking, as she is currently ranked 18th.
Indian female javelin thrower Annu Rani sealed her spot for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. She managed to do the same through her world ranking, which happens to be 18th, as she would be competing in the global event for the first time.
The Sports Authority of India confirmed the news on Friday. "#AnnuRani has qualified for #Tokyo2020 in women's javelin throw through her world ranking (18th). Many congratulations to her. #Cheer4India #TokyoOlympics," it announced on social media.
In March, she had bettered her national record of 63.24m during the 24th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships but missed the Olympic mark of 64.00m. Nevertheless, thanks to her consistent performance in the world circuit, her ranking was well within the limit of earning her the berth in Tokyo.
The 28-year-old Annu has competed in other competitive international events, winning four medals to date, a couple of bronze and silver. Her achievements came during the 2014 Asian Games, 2017 and 2019 Asian Championships, and 2016 South Asian Games. Owing to her consistency, she was awarded the Sportstar Aces Sportswoman of the Year in Athletics in 2020.
