The 13th edition of the Jaipur International Film Festival was held from January 15-19. Meanwhile, it saw a unique achievement, as a sports documentary bagged as many as five awards during the festival.

Taking Refuge, Target Tokyo 2020 is a sports documentary based on the Olympics, focusing on the refugees’ lives and journeys. Vanessa Hudson of Spain directed the film.

The film has won the awards in these four unique categories:
Best Documentary Feature
Golden Camel for Best Director
Green Rose Award for a Film which gives Global Message
Best Sound and Editing Award
Best Web Series

Abhinav Bindra Foundation supported the documentary. The project’s idea was from Italian shooter, Nicco Campriani, who shared the thought of the very documentary by sitting at a Starbucks cafe in Italy. It also features the life story of Mahdi, Khaoula and Luna.

Speaking on the documentary and the awards, Bindra told Asianet Newsable, “It’s a privilege for the Abhinav Bindra Foundation to be a part of the Make a Mark project and support Nicco and his team. This project truly captures the power of sport and that sport is something so unique that transcends borders.”

“The story of Mahdi, Khaoula and Luna is a resounding proclamation to the world that sport has the power to bring about change. As their documentary ‘Taking Refuge’ launches, Nicco and I are already thinking ahead with the launch of the project ‘Make A Mark’ as an extension of the work we have put in. We aim to see more Olympic champions get involved and future mentors to take this legacy forward,” Bindra had earlier told Times of India.

As for how the documentary was shot and produced, Campriani explained to TOI, “It was supposed to be one boy and one girl, but we ended up picking three. Then, we were short of equipment. I had to ask for my air rifle back from the Olympic Museum for one year. Now, I probably have to mail them again, asking for another year.”

Campriani is a three-time Olympic gold-medallist, besides being an eight-time winner of the medal, across competitions. Bindra is also a former Olympian and a gold-medal winner, while he has won six golds in the shooting circuit.
