SRK moves from B-town to Cape Town, buys T20 global league franchisee
- Shah Rukh Khan buys franchisee in T20 Global League, along with co-owners of Trinbago Knight Riders.
- The team will be named as Cape Town Knight Riders
- South African player, JP Duminy will be a marquee player for Cape Town Knight Riders
- The T20 Global League will be hosted in South Africa from November-December
FollowShah Rukh Khan, bought a franchisee of T20 global league that will be hosted by Cricket South Africa (CSA). CSA President Chris Nenzai and CEO Haroon Lorgat made the announcement, ahead of T20 Global League, which will be played in November-December at South Africa.
After Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, this is SRK's third team in T20 cricket leagues.
The eight teams that will play in the tournament will be featured around cities of South Africa - Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Benoni.
"On behalf of all of us from Knight Riders, congratulations to Cricket South Africa for the launch of exciting new T20 Global League. We are delighted and thankful that you have made Knight Riders, part of the new Global League. We are particularly thrilled to make Cape Town and Newlands our new home away from home," said Shah Rukh Khan.
The other owners of Cape Town Knight Riders include co-owners from Kolkata Knight Riders, Trinbago Knight Riders, and the GMR group which owns Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premiere League (IPL).
"We want to grow the Knight Riders brand globally, and acquiring a team in T20 Global league is a step in that direction. The South African league promises to be a great extravaganza and we are thankful to Cricket South Africa for making us part of the new phenomenon. We are glad to launch Cape Town Knight Riders," said Venky Mysore, CEO Managing Director of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders.
