Bengaluru: Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah who demolished the Australian batting line-up on the third day of the third Test in Melbourne on Friday (December 28).

Bumrah was outstanding as he took a career-best 6/33 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Thanks to his brilliant bowling, India bowled out the hosts for 151 to take a massive 292-run lead. Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets while Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami had one scalp each.

India captain Virat Kohli decided not to enforce the follow-on. At stumps, the visitors were in deep trouble at 54/5 but the lead had grown to 346.

One of India’s greatest fast bowlers, Srinath hailed Bumrah’s Melbourne show as “one of the best spells” in Australia.

“This would definitely be one of the best spells bowled in Australia. That is what my opinion is. He was unplayable all the way through. It was not just one spell but every ball he bowled he looked terrific. The pace he generated was unbelievable and the line he bowled was too good. He has brought in more variety and he has truly showcased all varieties in fast bowling,” the 49-year-old Srinath told Newsable.

The 49-year-old Srinath led the Indian pace attack in the 1990s. He played 67 Tests and 229 ODIs, claiming 551 wickets across the two formats.

Bumrah, who made his Test debut in South Africa in January this year, has made a rapid progress to be one of the best in the five-day format. The 25-year-old has so far collected 45 Test wickets in nine matches, including the current contest at MCG.

He is the first Asian to have grabbed a five-wicket haul in South Africa, England and Australia in the same calendar year.

The four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy currently level at 1-1. India won the first Test in Adelaide while the hosts bounced back in Perth in the second game. The final Test is in Sydney from January 3, 2019. India are chasing their maiden Test series win Down Under.
