Yeddyurappa returns luxury SUV to Nirani

Yeddyurappa returns the car

In a bid to end the controversy on his luxurious travels, B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday returned Rs.1.15 crore worth car which was given to him by a party colleague.

According to reports, Murugesh Nirani, BJP MLA and founder of Nirani Group, had gifted a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado to Yeddyurappa for his tour to the drought-hit areas Uttara Karnataka.

Nirani, also the owner of a sugar factory, has been accused of not paying up the wages to the farmers. On accepting an expensive car as a gift from Nirani, Yeddyurappa was severely criticised for being easy on the sugar baron.

To avoid further damage to his political career, the 73-year-old former Karnataka Chief Minister said, “In my forty years of political career, I have travelled to the nook and corner of the state by public transport. I do not have any need or intention of travelling in a luxury car.”

JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy said, “Accepting a luxury gift from a friend or from a colleague is not an offence. But before accepting any gift we should see the background of the person who is gifting us. Murugesh Nirani, being an industrialist and the owner of Nirani Sugars, has not paid wages to the farmers. Yeddyurappa, who has so much concern for farmers, should not accept gifts from such anti-farmer entrepreneurs”
