Outrageous! 90-year-old cancer patient raped at Knifepoint in Kerala

In an outrageous incident, a 90-year-old cancer patient was allegedly raped at knifepoint in her house at Kadakkal in Kollam. Though the relatives of the victim failed to file a  complaint even after a lapse of five days, the police and the State Human Rights Commission have taken up the case Suo Motu following media reports.

The elderly woman complained that one of her neighbours entered her house through back door at around 2 am on Friday and assaulted her at knifepoint. Though she pleaded him to spare her, the assailant did not relent, she told Asianet News.   

After the death of her husband twenty years back, the woman was staying alone in her house in Kadakkal. She has no children. 

Equally shocking was the response of her relatives and the elected representatives from the locality. Though the victim informed her relatives about the assault, they tried to cover up the incident and did not even care to give medical treatment to the hapless woman. A local panchayath member did pay a visit to her after the incident. But he advised her to pray so that the God would punish the criminal, the victim recalled.

After the Asianet News reported the shocking incident, the police hurriedly filed a FIR and took the accused into custody.  The State Human Rights Commission and Kerala State Women's Commission have taken Suo Motu case based on the report. The commissions have sought a report on the incident from District Police Chief.
