In July this year, Bengaluru was drowning in rainwater due to illegal construction over storm water drains. Embarrassed by the deluge, the government decided to demolish all illegal structures that were built over storm water drains.

The subsequent BBMP demolition drive resulted in hundreds of buildings belonging to middle-class families being torn down. But once they realised that some of these building belonged to influential personalities, the BBMP slyly halted the operation.

The demolition drive came to a complete standstill in light of the recent the Cauvery river row that saw the state in utter chaos.

The government had said that it would not succumb to pressure or influence and would demolish any construction subject to documented evidence of encroachment. However, actor Darshan’s house, which was illegally constructed on the storm water drain, remains untouched and so is the reportedly illegitimate Orion Mall.

Last month, a petition was filed against Orion Mall suggesting that certain parts of the mall was constructed over a storm water drain; the BBMP had said it was searching for documentary evidences to ascertain the claim before it set about demolishing, but Suvarna News already has access to the aforementioned documents, so how is it the BBMP is still searching for these documents?

Suvarna News also accessed land records submitted to BBMP Commissioner that clearly indicates that Kannada actor Darshan’s house, Tugudeepa, has been constructed over a storm water drain in RR Nagar.

Tugudeepa, which is situated in the Ideal Home Township, is constructed over 2 gunthas (2178 sq feet) of storm water drain situated in survey no. 38 of Halagevaderahalli village, Kengeri Hobli, Bengaluru South Taluk.

Will the government stick to its resolution

Darshan responded to Suvarna News’ query saying that he would demolish the house himself if evidence proved his house was illegal.

Evidence also suggests that ex-minister Shamanuru Shivashankarappa’s SS hospital is also constructed over 22 gunthas (23958 sq feet) of the storm water drain in the same township. The matter was reported to the BBMP commissioner on 8 September, 2016

The BBMP will now have to clear all these illegal constructions and this is what the Mayor had to say
