Achuthanandan had alleged that the investigation into the sex trafficking that put Muslim League leader and former minister PK Kunhalikkutty under the shade was subverted at various stages. However, the government counsel KK Venugopal rejected his contention and said that Achuthanandan was politically motivated.

Achuthanandan's counsel argued that the former Advocate General, who helped scuttle the investigation is the legal advisor of the present Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan. It showed the clout of the accused in the case, he said. Rejecting the plea, the apex court warned against wasting its time on political games.
