Two hills and three lakes are missing in Mandya

Two hills and three lakes are missing in Mandya

As per the official government map in 1922, there were five lakes and two hills in Mandya. All of these five lakes were built by the Maharaja of Mysore as tanks store drinking water for the drought-prone region. However, a new survey in the area reveals that now only two lakes remain, namely Kallahalli Lake and Guttalu Lake.

The lakes that are missing were named Chikkamandya Lake, Hosahalli Lake and Halahalli Lake

“Who made these three lakes and two hills to disappear and why? And who has stolen four stormwater drains in Mandya city?” This question, among others, was raised by Ravindra - an RTI activist, who has bought the issue to light. But the local government seems to have no answer or explanation.

Mandya city, incidentally, is facing the consequences of these disappearances. Many roads and residential areas of Mandya city become ponds and small lakes when it rains.

Recently Bengaluru witnessed heavy rains, which created chaos. After the floods, the state government suddenly leaped into action and started demolishing hundreds of houses and mansions, which had encroached on lakes, tanks and stormwater drains in the city.

Going by the current siituation, a repeat of this in Mandya city is all but inevitable.
