Former Speaker and Kerala minister T S John, 74, died of cancer at a hospital in Cherthala, Alappuzha on Thursday. He was one of the founders of Kerala Congress and is the working chairman of Kerala Congress (Secular).

John served as Kerala Assembly Speaker from February 1976 to March 1977. John represented Kallooppara constituency in the Assembly four times. He handled Civil Supplies portfolio in A K Antony Cabinet and in the P K Vasudevan Nair ministry in 1978.

John was a prominent leader of the Kerala Congress during its initial years. He joined Kerala Congress (Joseph) group following a split in the party. Later he joined Kerala Congress (Secular) when P C George formed the party.

He is survived by wife Elikutty.
