Tribal women raped at knifepoint in Kerala; police allegedly tried to cover it up

Tribal women raped at knifepoint in Kerala

In a shocking incident, a two-member gang broke into the house of a tribal family at Kalpatta in Wayanad and raped two women after threatening their husbands. Though the incident took place early morning on Sunday, the police allegedly tried to cover up the case.

The women belonging to Paniya tribe complained that two men raped them after threatening their husbands. The women, wives of tribal brothers, were sharing a house in the colony.  After the complaint of the women, the police arrested two persons in connection with the incident on Wednesday, Madhyamam newspaper reports.

It is alleged that the police sat on the complaint even after the tribal women approached the police on Sunday morning. Both women went to the police station in torn clothes to file the complaint. But the police arrested the accused only on Wednesday night. Worse, the medical examination of the women was further delayed and they went through the medical proceedings only on Thursday, four days after the alleged rape.  It is pointed out that the delay in medical examination would leave no clue on physical abuse.

Meanwhile, district police chief K Karthik told Madhyamam that they are considering the issue seriously. The investigation is on, and a Special Branch DySP will check whether there were any lapses on the part of the police, he informed.
