Tribal student assaulted by seniors

A first-year Philosophy student of University College, Thiruvananthapuram alleged that he was assaulted by his senior students belonging to Students Federation of India (SFI), the leftist students organisation, for his links with the pro-Congress Kerala Students Union (KSU).

AS Arun, who belongs to a tribal community in Aryanad, complained that he was assaulted by members of the SFI. The police have filed a case based on the complaint.

In his complaint, Arun claimed that the SFI activists questioned him about his political allegiance as he wanted to join the KSU, a wing of the Congress' National Students Union of India. He also alleged that the senior students snatched his mobile phone and abused his relatives over the phone. The student is currently undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. His relatives said that they are planning to approach the Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, seeking justice.

Condemning the incident, KS Sabarinadhan MLA said that it was a clear case of ragging and demanded strict action against the culprits.

The SFI district leadership, however, refuted allegation and distanced itself from the miscreants. It also alleged that Arun misbehaved with a senior girl student. Some senior students questioned that, the organisation district president told The New Indian Express. A senior girl student has filed a complaint claiming that the tribal student misbehaved with her.
