Hyderabad: 5-year-old on life support after being hit by drunk driver

A 5-year-old girl has been put on life support and is battling for her life after she and her mother were hit by a suspected drunk driver on Sunday evening in Hyderabad.


According to reports, Sanjana and her mother were crossing the road at the Pedda Amberpet area on, when the speeding car hit them.

 

The car was being driven by Venkatramana, a software engineer, who allegedly was drunk.  Venkatramana and the other two occupants of the car had abandoned the vehicle and fled after the accident. They surrendered to the police on Monday evening, NDTV reported.

 

The incident has created quite an uproar in the state, especially as the accident took place on October 2, which is supposed to a 'dry day.'

 

The victims, SV Sridevi, 30, suffered multiple fractures while the five-year-old is on life support.

 

Eyewitnesses said the occupants of the car were drinking and speeding on Vijayawada highway towards Hyderabad. The police also have recovered bottles of alcohol and snacks, raising suspicions that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol as well.

 

This incident has come mere three months after Ramya, a student of Class 4 and her family was killed after a drunk engineering student rammed their car. The child was on her way home from her first day at a new school and the family had gone to pick her up.
