Born in the Iyengar family, Jayalalithaa was a practising Tamil Brahmin. But her mortal remains were buried, even though the Brahmin tradition is to cremate the body. The AIADMK party had taken the decision to conduct her final rites similar to that of her mentor MG Ramachandran, who was also buried.

Later, her estranged family performed Jayalalithaa’s last rites in Karnataka. Relatives of Vasudevan, Jayalalithaa’s step brother initiated the ritual according to Iyengar traditions. Almost a week after Jaya’s body was buried, her effigy was made in holy grass and was cremated.

If her spirit is not happy with two sets of funeral rites - burial and cremation, what can keep her spirit calm?
