Watch: Tamil Nadu cops attack family for hurting their ego

Tamil Nadu police viral video

Tamil Nadu police is drawing flake for its high-handedness after a video showing police constables brutally beating up a family of three went viral.

According to a report in The Hindu, three policemen on Monday surrounded an auto driver and his son and beat them up brutally near Old Bus stand in Chengam, Thiruvannamalai district.

The video of the assault by the police later was aired on all channels in Tamil Nadu. According to reports,  Usha, a town panchayat sanitary worker and her husband Raja, an auto driver, along with their 17-year-old son Surya (17) were having an argument, when Raja allegedly slapped Usha for spending too much money to buy gold jewellery.

Three constables identified as Muruganandham, Vijayakumar and Nammazhvaar rushed in and beat up Raja. However, the family told the police that it was a family matter and they need not intervene. The remark enraged the constables who went on to beat up the husband and son.

The angry constables later even hit a passersby who tried to intervene.

In the assault by the police, all three sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The policemen reportedly later tried to strike a compromise with the family, however, by then the video footage of the incident had gone viral, following which Tiruvannamalai SP R. Ponni transferred the three policemen to Armed Reserve (AR), Vellore, and ordered a departmental inquiry.

“The three policemen have been transferred and asked to report at Vellore. The Chengam DSP has been asked to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and further action against the three will be decided after the inquiry report is submitted,” Ponni told Deccan Chronicle. She said a departmental enquiry was on.
