Kerala's influential Syro Malabar Church backs Uniform Civil Code

Syro Malabar Church backs Uniform Civil Code

As the Narendra Modi government's move to seek opinion of the Law Commission on Uniform Civil Code kicked up a heated debate on the sensitive subject, the influential Syro Malabar Catholic Church of Kerala has come out supporting the code.

Major Archbishop George Alanchery said that the unified code will be good for the integrity of the nation and the unity of its citizens. While implementing the code, the ritualistic diversity of the country should be safeguarded, he added.

I believe that the government will keep in mind the traditional rules and rituals of different religions and communities -for example, the tribal communities- while formulating the code. Archbishop George Alanchery

"The idea of a unified civil code is a welcome thing. I believe that the government will keep in mind the traditional rules and rituals of different religions and communities -for example, the tribal communities- while formulating the code. The government's stress on initiating discussions is positive and hope that all these concerns would be taken care of. I wish and pray for the success of the effort," said the Major Archbishop of the influential  Eastern Catholic Major Archiepiscopal Church in full communion with the Pope.

Meanwhile, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said that the Modi government was trying to divide the country by trying to introduce the unified code.
