Mutyalamma, a sweeper with BBMP for the last 40 years, believes that work is worship. She is 60 now and the mother of a corporator, but she still continues her career as a municipal worker and has no plans to stop working even though her circumstances have changed.

Mutyalamma’s daughter is currently the corporator of Raipur Ward. But that doesn’t faze her as, every morning, she gets up to go to work and sweep the roads of Chamarajpet.

“This work has given me a livelihood. I have been doing this work for 40 years. I will continue to work until I retire. I used to sweep the streets in Srirampuram earlier, now they have transferred me to Chamarajpet,” said Mutyalamma.

“She has been sweeping streets for 40 years. We were brought up by the money she earned from this work. Now I am a corporator, but my mother is not willing to give up her vocation. I have told her several times not to continue to work because age is catching up with her. But she doesn’t listen,” says her daughter Shashikala, Raipur Ward Corporator.

Mutyalamma is going to retire in a few days. She is proud of the fact that she has worked all these years and she loves her work.
