State cabinet approves new guidelines to release convicts

The Karnataka state cabinet has approved a new set of guidelines for premature release of prisoners in a meeting presided by chief minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday.

Law minister TB Jayachandra announced the resolutions of the meeting. According to the resolutions and the provisions of Section 433A criminal procedure code (CrPC), male and female convicts who have completed 14 years of imprisonment and have crossed 65 and 60 years of age, respectively, will be eligible for early release.

Section 433A of CrPC mentions the conditions under which a convict can be released from a prison.

However, prisoners who've been charged with smuggling, sedition, rape, homicide and serious offences will not be taken into consideration.
