Speeding BMTC costs 16-year-old her life

Speeding BMTC, pothole ridden road costs 16-year-old life

Savitha and Santosh from Bilikere village in Mysuru district were in town visiting their relatives. They had come to the city on Saturday to attend a wedding and were put up at their sister’s house in Sunkadakatte.

The siblings were heading to Akkamahadevi Kalyana Mantapa at Rajarajeshwarinagar for the wedding at around 10.30 am on Sunday when their vehicle was mowed down by a BMTC bus.

According to the police, the BMTC bus, which was heading from KR Market towards Doddabasti, kept blaring its horn, and a panicked Santosh lost control as the road was riddled with potholes. Savitha, who had just finished her 10th with a first class was run over by the bus.

She died on the spot while her brother suffered major injuries.

Santosh later told Bangalore Mirror: "I was unnerved by the honking of the bus behind me. Before I could give way, I hit the cement in a pothole and hit an autorickshaw. Before I realised what happened, the bus had run over Savitha's head."

The police have registered a case and have arrested the BMTC bus driver, Suresh.
