SDPI worker hacked to death in Kannur

With yet another brutal murder on Thursday,  the bloodshed in politically sensitive Kannur district in  Kerala seems to have no respite. A Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activist Farooque, 45, was hacked to death in Kannur City in broad daylight when several policemen and people looked on. But the police have ruled out political connection in the incident.

Farooq suffered fatal injuries in neck and stomach in the attack took place near Burma Hotel in Kannur City area about 11 am. Though the victim was rushed to a hospital in Kannur town, his life could not be saved. This is the third murder being reported from Kannur, the home district of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the past four days.

Police have arrested Rauf, a native of Kannur, in connection with the murder. However, police ruled out the possibility of political rivalry behind the incident.

There are unconfirmed reports that the rivalry between two gangs resulted in the murder. Farooq, a native of Poovalappu, was the president of SDPI Neerchal unit.

The incident took place at a time when BJP was observing a state-wide hartal to protest the murder of party activist Ramith on Wednesday. The district is witnessing a spurt in political violence after two persons, CPM and BJP activists, were killed within a span of 48 hours since Monday.
