Rs 5 lakh compensation to dog bite victims family

The Kerala government today announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a 65-year-old woman who was killed by a pack of street dogs near here, even as it reiterated its commitment to tackle the menace.

The decision on the compensation was taken at the state cabinet meeting held here, Minister for Local Administration K T Jaleel told reporters.

Siluvama, who was severely bitten by the dogs in Pulluvilla locality, succumbed to injuries while being rushed to a hospital near here on Sunday night.

The cabinet also sanctioned Rs 50,000 to another woman of the same locality who was injured in a separate attack by dogs, Jaleel said.

He said that the government would go ahead with steps to check the stray dog menace. Various measures, including sterilisation, would be implemented, he added.

In the backdrop of the continuing attacks by street dogs, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had on August 22 directed officials to take urgent steps to catch stray canine with the help of trained catchers.

A high-level meeting chaired by him had also decided to hold special sterilisation camp in areas where the street dog menace was serious.

A four-year-old boy was severely mauled on his lower jaw by a pack of street dogs in Kollam district yesterday.
