Rahul Gandhi will soon take over as Congress President

Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi will take over the mantle of the Congress President, as per the unanimous request of the party Working Committee.

Congress spokesperson PC Chacko, who is known for his close links with the Gandhi family, said that Rahul will officially take over the president's post. "As the Congress vice president and as the acting president, Rahul is now taking all party decisions. He will officially assume charge soon, we hope," Chacko said at Malappuram on Thursday.

Rahul took the reins of the party as acting president following Sonia Gandhi's health problems.  The Congress Working Committee had unanimously requested Rahul to be the president of the party. "It is the wish of the party and its workers," Chacko said.

The reports of elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the president of the party has been in the air for long. In November last year, the party Working Committee had unanimously requested him to take over the top job. In the early November meeting, Rahul chaired the  Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting for the first time after he was nominated as the party Vice President in 2013.

There were a lot of criticism on Rahul's leadership even within the party after its poor performance in the recent assembly elections including in Uttar Pradesh.
