Ragging girl forced to drink toilet lotion

A 19-year-old Dalit nursing student, who underwent a brutal ragging at a college hostel in Karnataka, is struggling for life with her food pipe got burnt after her seniors allegedly forced her to drink toilet cleaner.

Aswathy, a native of Edappal in Malappuram district, suffered serious internal burn injuries in a ragging incident on 9 May at the hostel of a nursing college at Gulbarga in Karnataka. She is under treatment at Kozhikode Medical College for more than a month now.

An eight-member gang of senior girl students, including Malayalees, allegedly forced the nursing student to drink toilet cleaner on 9 May. "Seniors used to take us to their room and make us do many things in the name of ragging. They forced us to roll in waste and wouldn't allow us to have food on many days. On that day, they forcefully poured toilet cleaner into my mouth. Before taking me to a hospital at Gulbarga, some seniors made me vomit by sticking fingers in mouth," Aswathy said.

The girl got admitted to an intensive care unit in a hospital at Gulbarga for five days before being shifted to Kerala. As there was no improvement in her condition, the college authorities sent her home along with a fellow student. The girl's relatives alleged that she was subjected to brutal ragging from the day she joined the hostel.
