Purchase drinking water for Rs1 per litre

Kerala is facing acute water shortage with an alarming dip in drinking water resources owing to extreme heat. Foreseeing the situation, Kudumbashree, the women self-help group, has decided to launch a mega drinking water project soon.

The Kudumbashree Kozhikode unit is planning to come up with a plan to provide drinking water for as low as ₹ 1 per litre. The project is a great relief for people who spend ₹20 to 30 per litre. They will now get 20 litres of water for the price they pay for one litre now.
"Kerala is facing drought and we thought providing drinking water at an affordable rate will be a boon for people," Kudumbashree project officer Ramsy Ismail said.

The group is planning to install the water treatment plant within the old Corporation office premises. The plant will have an average capacity of 1,000 litres per day. The maximum capacity of the tank will be 20, 000 litres. The treatment plant will be purchased under the government scheme to provide it at a subsidised rate. Other expenses will be met with the funds from Kudumbashree.

The water will be sold within corporation limits. "We are planning for a tie-up with a government agency for this project. Kudumbashree workers will be deployed in all stages including marketing and distribution of water," the project officer said.
