P R Sreejesh Asianet News Keerthimudra Award


Indian Hockey Team captain P R Sreejesh won 'Asianet News Keerthimudra Award' in the sports category. The award carries a purse of Rs 1 lakh and memento. 


Sreejsh was selected by a panel consisting of sports journalist A N Raveendranath, Sports Council former president Padmini Thomas and Lakshmibai National College for Physical Education principal G Kishore. Audience poll was also taken into consideration for selecting the winner. 
 

Sreejesh, the first hockey player from Kerala to lead the national team, was successful in guiding his men to quarter-finals in Rio Olympics. The shot-stopper, as the goalkeeper-captain is fondly called by his teammates, hails from Kizhakkambalam in Ernakulam district. He is the winner of Arjuna Award and Dhruv Batra Player of the Year award in 2015.


Indian team came first in the 2014 Asian Games held at Incheon when Sreejesh saved two penalty strokes in the final against Pakistan. His saves were crucial in the performance of the team at Commonwealth Games, 2014, where India won silver medal. 
 

The award recognises sports personalities from the state who have made a mark in international sports arena. The finalists included athletes K M Beenamol, Anju Bobby George, boxer K C Lekha and cricketer S Sreesanth.  
 

Asianet News instituted the award as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. Award will be given to youngsters who have proven themselves in the fields including politics, sports, music, literature, agriculture and environment.
