Hospital authorities deciding to shut down operation theatres owing to various reasons have come to notice earlier. However, the authorities of Wayanad district hospital decided to down the shutters of the facility due to a strange reason, pigeon menace.

The theatre was shut down after remains of decomposed pigeon was found in the ceiling of the room.

The rare incident took place at the district hospital in Wayanad. The facility was closed down after orders from district medical officer.

"A bird entered the room through a gap in the roof of the building and got stuck in the false ceiling. The trapped bird died there, and hospital authorities came to know about this only when the fluid from decomposed body oozed out and fell on a patient in post operative ward," district medical officer Dr V Jithesh said.

Now the entire facility and associated rooms will have to be sanitised.

"The entire theatre will be sanitised, and fumigation will be carried out. We hope the service will become functional in a day or two," he said.

The authorities also asked Nirmiti Kendra, who constructed the building to close the gap in the roof to prevent such incidents from occurring in future.
