The Olympian resigned as the president of the Kerala Sports Council last week after a series of controversies and a confrontation with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government. Along with Anju, sports personalities including Tom Jose and Preeja Sreedharan had quit the council. All of them had been nominated by the Congress-led United Democratic Front government.

Kerala Sports Minister EP Jayarajan had allegedly behaved rudely to Anju when she went to meet him officially for the first time. Hurt by the ill treatment, she approached Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and complained about the minister. But Vijayan publicly backed his minister. Later, CPM leaders, including former Sports Council president TP Dasan, who is widely tipped to replace Anju, levelled allegations of corruption against the athlete.  "Deeply pained" by the allegations, the Olympian put in her papers and demanded the government to probe the allegations against the council with retrospective effort.
