DK Shivakumar stops I-Day cultural program over 'bad examples'

Officers who committed suicide are cowards

Karnataka's energy minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the in-charge minister of Mandya, hoisted the flag on Independence Day in VV Stadium, Mandya. After the ceremony, a troupe of school children staged a skit in the stadium.

In the skit, they displayed photos of Joint Commissioner DK Ravi, Deputy Superintendent of Police MK Ganapathy and Deputy Superintendent of Police Kallappa Handibag.

The suicides of these officers has been a raging controversy in Karnataka for the past several months, thanks to accusations of corruption, illegal pressure from higher ups and a general sense of mismanagement of police forces by the state.

Seeing their photographs, DK Shivakumar immediately told the organisers to stop the program and has warned Shivamadu, Deputy Director of Public Instructions (DDPI ), who was present, not to conduct such misleading programs in the name of 'cultural activities'.

With his outburst snowballing into a minor controversy, on Wednesday the minister held a press meet, in which he said that people who commit suicide cannot set a good example for children.

“In the Independence day celebrations, we should display photos of people who have fought for the country, not people who commit suicide. I, as a patriot, ordered the organisers to stop that skit” he said.
