Now you can say no to a breathalyzer test in Bengaluru

A data has revealed that Bengaluru has the highest number of people who are booked under Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol. Shockingly, Bengaluru police booked 59,028 motorists last year. But a number of motorists have complaint that the Police have faulty breathalyzers, which give wrong readings and as a result they have to pay the fine.

Bengaluru city police commissioner Praveen Sood tweeted on Sunday that people now can refuse to get tested for DUI if a straw is not used. To add to the tweet, Sood also said that all the policemen who are deployed to carry out these tests have been provided with the straws so that the motorists cannot complain.

Here is the tweet:

"Many have disputed the readings, and it has even been used as an excuse. We want this process to be transparent. Policemen have been told how to operate the machines. Now, we are giving people the power to refuse to take the test if cops don't follow the instructions," Sood was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

In case you did not know, the point raised by the motorists seemed to be valid. It is because the test is done in two parts. First the police checks if a motorist is drunk and then they identify the amount of alcohol the person has in his/her blood. The same breathalyzer is used for both the tests but currently, the straw is only used for the second part of it.

So the complaint that the motorists came up with was that they have been using the same straw which were used by another motorist. If the previous motorist was found drunk, then liquor traces would remain in the straw and that in return would end up inflating their alcohol content level.
