National Womens Commission seeks arrest Lakshmi Nair

The students of Kerala Law Academy (KLA) returned to their classes on Tuesday, on a victorious note after management agreed to remove principal Lakshmi Nair and it seems they have one more reason to cheer. National Women's Commission member Sushma Sahu, who visited the campus demanded action, including the arrest of the former principal, at the earliest.

Sahu interacted with girl students for over an hour and listened to their complaints. The students had written to Commission seeking intervention. She also met Soorya Gayatri and Asmitha Kabeer, who allegedly faced moral policing by Nair.

Sahu assured students that action would be taken against the former principal.

As Sahu was interacting with students, Ajayakrishnan, college director and husband of Lakshmi Nair, rushed to the classroom and pleaded students not to lodge any complaint with the Commission.

Speaking to reporters, Sahu said she was shocked by the revelations of students and that Nair was behaving like Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Expressing wonder why the former principal is not yet behind the bars even after a case was filed against her for alleged caste remarks Sahu said she would request Police Commissioner to arrest her at the earliest.

She later met the Commissioner and inquired about the progress of the case registered against Nair and requested copies of FIR filed against KLA former principal. She also expressed dissatisfaction over the inaction of police in dealing with the case and said a complaint would be lodged with the Home Secretary against DGP K E Baiju, who is probing the case.

KLA had been in the eye of a storm after students, especially girls launched a strike alleging nepotism, irregularities in awarding of internal marks, harassment, caste remarks, etc. by principal Lakshmi Nair. Various student outfits supported the strike and stood together demanding the removal of the principal following which management removed her from the post.
