The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing to double the capacity of the East-West corridor (Purple Line) of by adding three more coaches to its trains that currently have three coaches.

BMRCL has the capacity to run trains every three minutes between Baiyappanahalli and Mysuru Road. Currently, it is running trains once in four minutes during peak hours. Running services every three minutes with the existing trains would consume more electricity and add to maintenance costs of the trains. Experts say that these problems can be avoided if additional coaches are used.

The current metro trains have a total commuter capacity of 1,000 people; this will be doubled with additional coaches.

BMRCL has already completed the tender processes for this and the work has been allotted to Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) as sources said BEML was the only company that participated in the bidding process. BEML is going to manufacture 150 coaches in 12 months. The estimated cost for 150 coaches is around ₹ 1,600 crore.

BMRCL officials recently told the Bangalore Mirror that they expect the daily ridership on Namma Metro to cross 5 lakh this year.
