The court might have awarded life term to the accused for murdering T P Chandrasekharan, the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader who became the victim of political rivalry, but the convicts seem to be enjoying their time in jail with modern facilities like the internet and smartphones.

Jail authorities seized smartphones, power banks, data cables and three sim cards from convicts N K Sunil Kumar alias Kodi Suni and K K Muhammed Shafi. This is the second time that mobile phones are seized from the convicts of T P Chandrasekharan murder.

Authorities are also checking whether the prisoners are active on social media using fake identity as they were found updating social networking sites during remand term at Kozhikode District Jail.

The duo, along with other convicts is lodged in high-security Viyyur Central Jail. Jail officers decided to conduct raid following reports that the inmates are using smartphones. Last week, a prisoner was caught trying to smuggle mobile phone, hiding in his rectum.

Two weeks ago, Kodi Suni attacked a jail warden, who tried to film the convict making a phone call from the prison. Suni grabbed the camera from the officer, took out the memory card and broke it to destroy evidence.

As the incident came to light, jail authorities issued a memo to the warden and asked him to explain in writing why he took camera to jail premises. The authorities said that it is illegal to film prison inmates without permission.

It was during the inquiry into the incident that authorities unearthed mobile phones and other devices from the convicts. During the raid, officials found that the duo had put the phone on charge and was not even trying to hide it.

Allegations are rife that Shafi is active on social media using smart phone from jail and that the inmates are accessing phones with the help of officials.

Though mobile phones were seized from jail earlier, this is for the first time that power banks and data cables were found in cells.
