Mosques to implement green protocol

In a move emphasising environmental conservation, Muslim institutions, including Mosques in Kollam district have decided to abide by green protocol. The move is part of Suchitwa Mission.

Jam'ath committees will issue guidelines regarding implementation of green protocol at Mosques and religious festivals. Educational institutions, Mosques and even ceremonies will strictly follow green protocol.

As part of the initiative, disposable glasses and utensils will be avoided and instead use reusable steel, clay or glass vessels for programmes including iftar feasts, public meetings, food donations and other religious celebrations. The committee will also take measures to ensure implementation of the green protocol in private functions including marriages. Use of plastic decorations and flexes will also be avoided in both public and private functions.

"We are planning to implement green protocol prior to the holy month of Ramzan. The religious leaders have taken up the issue, and even the holy book of Quran urges not to throw waste in open and follow cleanliness in personal and public places. The religious leaders have agreed to cooperate in realising Harita Keralam and Suchitwa Bharat Mission completely," district coordinator of Suchitwa Mission, G Krishnakumar said.

The district administration has also implemented the plastic ban as part of Centre's Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2016. It is for the local self-government departments to enforce the rules.
