Former legal advisor to Kerala CM rakes up factionalism in CPM; points fingers at VS

MK Damodarab alleges high level conspiracy

Senior lawyer MK Damodaran, who was forced to 'quit' as the legal advisor to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has indirectly blamed VS Achuthanandan for his unceremonious exit. He alleged that there was a high-level conspiracy to malign him. Damodaran also said that the move against his posting as the legal advisor to the CM originated after the Supreme Court rejected Achuthanandan's plea for a CBI investigation into the Icecream parlour sex trafficking case.

"Though the state government had issued the order appointing me as the legal advisor to the CM on 9 June, it didn't become news till the day on which the Supreme Court rejected the petition of Achuthanandan regarding the Icecream case," Damodaran told The Hindu. He also alleged that there was a concerted campaign against him after the court verdict. "Though I will not name anyone as responsible for the smear campaign, it would be anybody's guess," he added.

It may be recalled that the Kerala government counsel had accused Achuthanandan of 'political motivation' in demanding a CBI probe into the Icecream parlour case. In response to that, the counsel of Achuthanandan pointed out that MK Damodaran, former Advocate General, who played a key role in scuttling the case, is the legal advisor to the Kerala Chief Minister. Achuthanandan referred to Damodaran's appointment as the legal advisor to demonstrate the clout of the accused in the case.

Notably, in his latest outburst after his unceremonious exit as the legal advisor to the Chief Minister, Damodaran made specific reference to the Icecream parlour case to indirectly point fingers at Achuthanandan who is leading a long-drawn legal battle in the case in which Muslim League leader PK Kunjalikkutty stands under cloud.

Though a raging controversy preceded the 'exit' of Damodaran as the legal advisor, VS Achuthanandan has been keeping a studied silence . But with Damodaran dragging him into the row, the CPM veteran is likely to fight back. Since Damodaran is no longer the legal advisor of the CM, there is nothing to stop Achuthanandan from give him a befitting response.

If the CPM felt relieved after Damodaran "voluntarily chose not to accept the post of legal advisor," the latest developments prove that the party's worries are far from over.
