Men threaten mass suicide in the capital

Six men who were in the rank list for selection to the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) Thunder Bolt commandos kept the police, media and public on tenterhooks for nearly 4 hours near the Secretariat after they threatened to end lives if their demands are not met.

The six Kerala PSC (Public Service Commission) rank holders allege that for past six years they have been waiting for posting orders but so far no official procedures have been made to induct them into the force. The representatives of the association have now demanded talks with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the presence of peoples representatives.

Two men positioned themselves on top of a tree and four others threatened to jump off from a bank building nearby. The association had attempted a similar mode of protest six months back but the protestors were persuaded by the Collector.

From the 2 lakh candidates who gave the exam, only 999 were shortlisted, of these 550 are still waiting to be appointed.

According to latest reports, the Chief Minister has agreed to hold talks with agitators, assuring the matter would be resolved.
