A Prison Officer of Central Jail at Viyyur in Kerala was caught red-handed for smuggling in liquor, meat and smartphone as 'Onam special' to jail inmates. The officer had stocked 19 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor, numerous bundles of beedi, three packets of meat, five mobile phone battery and a smartphone to be sold to inmates.

The Prison officer was arrested immediately and suspended after a surprise raid by jail superintendent unearthed goods meant to be sold for prisoners from the barrack of jail officials in the prison premises.  The liquor bottles were kept under a cot in the barrack.

The superintendent raided the barrack after a tip off on the other day. He also got information on a racket of officials and inmates that smuggle in ganja, liquor and tobacco inside the jail. Some staff members also make good money by renting out charged mobile phone batteries to the detainees.

In 2014, the accused in the sensational murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader TP Chandrashekharan hit headlines by posting hundreds of pictures on their Facebook page from the District Jail in Kozhikode where they had been lodged. The CCTV footage of the accused having fun inside the jail with liquor and cigarettes had also emerged at that point.
